The mother of a missing 5-month-old baby in South Carolina has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

Horry County Police spokesman Lt. Raul Dennis said 33-year-old Sarah Lane Toney was charged Wednesday, a day after she was taken into custody.

Dennis says Toney showed up at a woman’s home across the creek from her own house and said she had put her baby in the water. Dennis says the creek is currently about 6 to 8 feet deep.

Toney remains in the Horry County jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.

Search crews are fighting through swift water and swampy land as they search for a 5-month-old girl whose mother said she left the baby Tuesday in a creek in South Carolina.

Horry County Police spokesman Lt. Raul Dennis said searchers are concentrating on a 1 square mile area behind 33-year-old Sarah Lane Toney’s home near Myrtle Beach. They are using special sonar equipment, along with boats, canoes and personal watercraft.

The creek is full of reeds, trees and other vegetation, and recent rains have it running swiftly into the Intracoastal Waterway. Conditions are so treacherous that Dennis says the search can only go on in daylight.

A police officer could be seen poking a pole into rain-swollen drainage ditches in the neighborhood around the creek.

Rescue workers in eastern South Carolina have resumed the search for a 5-month-old girl after a woman said she put her baby in a creek near Socastee.

Horry County Police Lt. Raul Denis said in an email Wednesday morning that officials had delayed the search because of storms in the area near the Intracoastal Waterway. The search eventually resumed late Wednesday morning.

Officers were called Tuesday by a resident who said a woman was on her porch, saying she had put her child in the water.

Investigators think the woman had been in the water with the child, Grace, a short distance away and came out of the creek without the girl.

The mother, 33-year-old Sarah Lane Toney of Myrtle Beach, has been arrested on unrelated charges.
