Three dead in North Carolina plane crash

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 8 (UPI) — Three people died when a single-engine plane crashed Monday at a rock quarry in North Carolina, emergency officials said.

The small, single-engine plane departed from Sarasota, Fla., and was on its way to Piedmont Triad International in Greensboro, N.C., when the pilot sent a distress signal to the airport.

The plane crashed at about noon into a rock quarry at Vulcan Materials in Forsyth County, N.C.

The names of the victims were not released.

Dan Osment, director of Emergency Medical Services for Forsyth County, told WXII 12 the pilot sounded “disoriented” when he called the airport and attempted to make an emergency landing.

Kevin Baker, PTI’s executive director, told the Winston-Salem Journal the pilot was likely unable to tell the control tower what the problem was on the plane right before the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the plane was a Beechcraft Bonanza A36 six-seater propeller aircraft. A Forsyth County 911 Center representative said the plane immediately burst into flames, and at least three fire departments responded to the scene.

Results of an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB are slated to release more information later this week.
