Tigers’ Justin Verlander has no-hitter through 8 innings

DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander has not allowed a hit for the Detroit Tigers through eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels.

Looking for his third career no-hitter, Verlander has faced the minimum Wednesday night. He walked two but induced a pair of double plays.

Verlander walked David Murphy on four pitches to start the eighth, then fell behind 2-0 on Erick Aybar before getting a double-play grounder.

The right-hander struck out five consecutive batters prior to Murphy’s walk, including Mike Trout looking at a breaking ball for the second out in the seventh. Albert Pujols then went down swinging at an inside fastball.

Verlander hasn’t won since July 29, but entered with a 2.00 ERA over his past four starts. He’s thrown 100 pitches and struck out eight.

Verlander’s most recent no-hitter came at Toronto on May 7, 2011. He also pitched one against Milwaukee on June 12, 2007.

The Tigers lead 5-0.
