A spokesman for Ron Turcotte says the jockey who rode Secretariat to the 1973 Triple Crown is in “great spirits” and has been gabbing with fellow riders while recovering in a hospital after breaking his legs. He was injured when the van he was driving hit an icy patch and flipped on its side earlier this week.
Turcotte, who has been paralyzed from the waist down after a riding spill in 1978, and a friend were in a one-car accident Monday on the Trans-Canada Highway near his home in Grand Falls, New Brunswick.
Spokesman Leonard Lusky said he spoke on the phone with the 73-year-old Turcotte on Friday, and that the Hall of Famer has been talking with retired jockeys Pat Day and Eddie Maple, among others.
Lusky had no update on Turcotte’s condition, but said there are no plans to release him from the hospital anytime soon.
