Twitter knocks Clinton with #NotMyAbuela

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) — An attempt by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign to identify with Latino voters fell flat, instead inspiring the hashtag #NotMyAbuela.

The Clinton camp posted a piece on the campaign’s website Monday titled “7 things Hillary Clinton has in common with your abuela.” Abuela is the Spanish word for grandmother. The post refers to Chelsea Clinton’s recent pregnancy announcement:

“It’s no secret that Hillary is loving her role as grandma. And she was thrilled to learn that next summer, her granddaughter Charlotte will have a sibling to play with.”

The list features gifs of the candidate as well as policy stances on vaccines, immigration and women’s rights. It is peppered with Spanish phrases, and at the bottom — under a picture of Clinton with Marc Anthony — it asks supporters to sign up for more “abuela updates.”

Instead of inspiring broad support, Twitter turned on Clinton, rallying under the hashtag #NotMyAbuela. Users criticized everything from Clinton’s campaign funding to her tactics. Several accused her of “hispandering” to garner votes among Latinos.
