CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 3 (UPI) — Two U.S. Army pilots flying an Apache helicopter from Fort Campbell died when their aircraft crashed during a routine training exercise in Tennessee.
The pilots, part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), were flying the two-seat AH-64D Apache Wednesday night when the aircraft went down about 12 miles south of Fort Campbell, the Army said.
Investigators from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center were trying to determine the cause of the crash. The names of the pilots are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency Director Jerry Buchanan said the helicopter was found crashed in a river bottom and was on fire when emergency crews arrived.
“We put the fire out. We can’t say whether there are fatalities,” he said early in the investigation. “There are about 30 to 40 emergency workers on site.”
