Typhoon Dujuan kills two in Taiwan, arrives in eastern China

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (UPI) — Typhoon Dujuan killed at least two people and injured more than 300 in Taiwan before reaching eastern China on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of 260,000 in the Zhejiang province.

Typhoon Dujuan, the 21st typhoon this year, had wind gusts of up to 141 miles per hour while it moved through Taiwan. The typhoon weakened into a tropical storm Tuesday morning as it traveled through China’s southeastern Fujian province.

About 1.8 million homes lost power in Taiwan, where thousands were evacuated and tens of thousands of troops were prepared to render assistance. The typhoon killed a construction worker and an elderly person.

In China on Monday, 32,000 fishing boats in Fujian’s coastal city of Putian returned to harbor and about 160,000 people sought shelter inland in preparation of the typhoon’s arrival.

August’s Typhoon Soudelor, the most powerful this year, killed at least eight in Taiwan and 21 in China.
