TOKYO, Aug. 25 (UPI) — Category 3 Typhoon Goni hit the southern Japanese island of Kyushu early Tuesday, causing injuries and triggering evacuations just three days after causing death and damage in the Philippines.
Goni swept into Kumamoto prefecture at 6 a.m. and charged through Kyushu before cutting through the city of Shimonoseki, where 280,000 residents were advised to evacuate, Bloomberg reported.
There were 33 reported injuries in Kyushu, and Japan’s official weather service issued warnings for high waves, landslides and flooding in most of southern and western Japan.
Flights were canceled to and from airports in southern Japan. Japan Airlines canceled 106 domestic flights that affected the travel plans of 10,440 passengers, and flights to South Korea were also likely to have been delayed.
Goni is the 15th typhoon to hit Japan, according to Tokyo’s weather agency – and more extreme weather is expected to affect the country until October.
Goni’s impact in the Philippines was more deadly. The hurricane killed 14 people and according to CNN the typhoon prompted the evacuation of nearly 13,000 people on Saturday.
Damage to homes and public infrastructure also were more serious in the Philippines where nine floods, eight landslides, two tornadoes and a collapsed bridge overwhelmed the residents of Mountain Province, Benquet and Ilocos Norte.
