SUITLAND, Md., Oct. 14 (UPI) — Revenues in the U.S. retail and food service sectors showed a slight increase in September over the month before — and still a bit more over the same time last year, the nation’s federal statistics bureau said Wednesday.
According to the Census Bureau, advanced estimates for revenues in those industries total nearly $448 billion — which would be up 0.1 percent from August and an increase of 2.4 percent over September 2014.
The estimates are adjusted for seasonal variation and other factors, the Bureau said.
“The advance estimates are based on a subsample of the Census Bureau’s full retail and food services sample. A stratified random sampling method is used to select approximately 4,900 retail and food services firms whose sales are then weighted and benchmarked to represent the complete universe
of over three million retail and food services firms,” the bureau said in a report Wednesday.
The Census Bureau revealed the figures in its Advance Monthly Retail Trade and Food Services Survey, known as MARTS.
According to the report, retail trade sales remained virtually unchanged from August. Motor vehicle and parts dealers were up nearly 9 percent from last year and food services and drinking places were up almost 8 percent.
The Bureau’s report underscored that the results are not final figures, as they are based only on a sample size.
