PARIS, Dec. 8 (UPI) — U2 invited Eagles of Death Metal to share their stage in Paris less than a month after the terrorist attacks killed 130 people in the city.
“They were robbed of their stage three weeks ago,” U2 lead singer Bono said to the crowd. “So we’d like to offer them ours tonight.”
At the end of U2’s show at the AccorHotels Arena — a concert that was itself postponed due to the attacks — Bono hugged lead singer of EODM Jesse Hughes and together the two groups covered Patti Smith’s People have the Power.
U2 then left the stage for the band that was in the middle of their Nov. 13 show when terrorists broke into the Bataclan venue and killed 90 people.
EODM asked other bands to perform their song “I Love You All the Time” last week and donate the proceeds to the victims, but Monday, the band was able to perform the song themselves for an audience of 16,000.
During the previous night’s show, Bono told the crowd “We stand together with the families of those killed in Paris,” as victims’ names appeared on a huge video screen.
Bono wrapped himself in the French flag during the band’s encore and sang a verse of Jacques Brel’s “Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don’t Leave Me)”.
