NEW DELHI, Oct. 20 (UPI) — A court in India has found an Uber driver guilty of raping a female passenger in Delhi in a case that generated worldwide condemnation.
In December, Shiv Kumar Yadav was accused of taking a 25-year-old woman who booked a trip through Uber to a forested area and raping her. Uber and other web-based taxi services were temporarily banned by Delhi, citing failure to conduct adequate background checks.
Yadav was also convicted of criminal intimidation and kidnapping. His sentence was scheduled for later this week.
The victim sued Uber in a U.S. court but the case was settled out of court. She received threatening messages since first seeking justice for the crime — threats which escalated as the trial against Yadav drew to a close.
Amit Jain, president of Uber in India, agreed with the verdict.
“Sexual assault is a terrible crime and we’re pleased this driver has now been brought to justice,” Jain said in a statement. “Safety is a priority for Uber and we’ve made many improvements — in terms of new technology, enhanced background checks and better 24/7 customer support — as a result of the lessons we learned from this awful case.”
