ALBUQUERQUE, April 28 (UPI) — Jon Jones, the UFC’s light heavyweight champ, was released on $2,500 bail after turning himself in to police Monday after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run incident Sunday in New Mexico, according to {link:multiple reports.: “http://www.mmafighting.com/2015/4/28/8506873/ufc-champ-jon-jones-out-of-jail-on-2500-bail”,nw, t: “Jones arrested”}
The Albuquerque Police Department used its {link:Twitter account: “https://twitter.com/ABQPOLICE”,nw, t: “APD Twitter”} to rattle off a series of tweets Sunday about Jones.
“We CANNOT confirm that Jon Jones was involved in a H&R traffic accident from this morning. The {link: : “http://www.upi.com/News_Photos/view/78fd5d90668922846a28c0e5be166d2f/?ilink=1″,nw, t: “NASCAR Daytona 500 at Daytona Florida”} investigation is ongoing,” the {link:first tweet said: “https://twitter.com/ABQPOLICE/status/592468926136647680″,nw, t: “APD first tweet”} at 6:22 p.m.
“We can now confirm that we are looking for UFC fighter Jon Jones for questioning stemming from a H&R this morning,” the {link:next tweet said: “https://twitter.com/ABQPOLICE/status/592516729491722240″,nw, t: “APD second tweet”} at 9:32 p.m.
The next series of posts said that an {link:arrest warrant: “http://www.cabq.gov/police/documents/criminal-complaint-arrest-warrant-affidavit-jonathan-jones-april-27-2015.pdf/”,nw, t: “Jones warrant”} was issue for Jones, but he had agreed to turn himself in. Later, the account posted that he had been booked into Bernalillo County MDC “without any incident.”
According to the {link:city website: “http://www.cabq.gov/police/news/albuquerque-police-seek-ufc-fighter-for-questioning?aa=1″,nw, t: “Albuquerque City Website”}, the police were seeking Jones for questioning “in regards to his possible involvement in a hit-and-run accident, near the intersection of Juan Tabo and Southern, in Southeast Albuqerque early” on the morning of April 26.
The driver of the other vehicle was a pregnant female in her 20’s. She was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.
Jones allegedly ran a red light, setting off a three-car accident before witnesses say he fled his vehicle and jumped over a fence. “We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident,” the UFC {link:said in a statement: “http://www.ufc.com/news/UFC-Statement-on-Jon-Jones-042615″,nw, t: “UFC Statement on Jones”}. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
Jones, 27, had a DWI in 2012 and tested positive in December for cocaine metabolites.
Jones is scheduled to fight Anthony Johnson in the main event of UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas.
