LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 (UPI) — Just three days after beating Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 182 at the MGM Grand Garden to retain his light heavyweight title, Jon “Bones” Jones has entered a drug treatment facility. The 27-year-old has a 21-1 record in his professional MMA career.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo!, Jones tested positive for benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite in cocaine.
“I am proud of Jon Jones for making the decision to enter a drug treatment facility,” UFC President Dana White said on the UFC’s official website. “I’m confident that he’ll emerge from this program like the champion he truly is.”
The UFC also released the following statement on Jones:
“We support UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ decision to enter a drug treatment facility to address his recent issue. While we are disappointed in the failed test, we applaud him for making this decision to enter a drug treatment facility. Jon is a strong, courageous fighter inside the Octagon, and we expect him to fight this issue with the same poise and diligence. We commend him on his decision, and look forward to him emerging from this program a better man as a result.”
Brandon Wise of CBSSports.com reported that Jones tested positive for the random drug test on Dec. 4, which did not result in a punishment.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported that since the test was “considered out-of-competition” the result to the Cormier match will stand.
Jones was charged with DWI on May 19, 2012 and had his license revoked for six months and was fined $1,000.
