Ukraine MH-17 crash investigators find suspected Russian missile parts

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Aug. 11 (UPI) — Investigators of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH-17 crash announced Tuesday they found fragments of a suspected Russian missile system from the crash site in eastern Ukraine.

The parts, discovered by a joint team in the Netherlands, are possibly from a Buk surface-to-air missile system provided by Russia used by pro-Russian separatist rebels in Ukraine, according to investigative officials.

Flight 17 was en route from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 17, 2014, when it was shot down in the eastern Donetsk region. Western officials believe a missile fired by pro-Russia forces hit the passenger jet, but the Russian government has blamed Ukraine for the disaster.

All 298 people aboard the Boeing 777 were killed in the crash.

The investigative team is made up of representatives from Australia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and the Netherlands, who are meeting in The Hague to discuss a draft report on the causes of the MH17 crash. A final version of the report is scheduled for release in October.

More than 7,000 people have died and more than a million have been displaced since the seperatist conflict in Ukraine began in 2014.
