University of Missouri increases security after threats

COLUMBIA, S.C., Nov. 11 (UPI) — University of Missouri police increased security after a series of threats were posted on social media, renewing tensions on campus after days of racially charged turmoil.

The school said it was “aware of social media threats” and was investigating at least two made on the location-based messaging app Yik Yak. One person threatened “I’m going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see,” citing the controversial Stand Your Ground law. Another said “We’re waiting for you at the parking lots. We will kill you.”

The Black Culture Center on campus was closed Tuesday afternoon after a threat was called in during a meeting between the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus and ConcernedStudent1950, an organization staging protests against on-campus racism.

The threats come after weeks of racial tensions and the resignation of university President Tim Wolfe and campus chancellor R. Bowen Loftin on Monday. .
