UNRWA: Gaza Civilians pay heavy price for Israel assault

Gaza City, July 12 (Petra) —- Civilians are paying a heavy price for Israel’s ongoing military attacks on the Gaza Strip, director of operations of the United Nations relief agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, Robert Turner, said, calling for an immediate end to the five-day assault.

He told a press conference held at Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, where he visited Palestinians wounded by Israeli bombardment of the coastal enclave, that he had learned about the needs of the Gaza health sector, which had already been struggling even before the start of the Israeli offensive.

"This war should stop immediately due to the dangerous and unacceptable damage it is causing," added Turner, who was accompanied on the tour by World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Mahmoud Daher.

He said UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, had declared a state of emergency since Tuesday as its clinics had been working continuously and distributing food to Gazans.

He said the relief agency was ready to accommodate 35,000 people in its schools if Israel launched a land operation against Gaza.
