6.7-magnitude quake shakes Indonesia

JAKARTA, Oct. 11 (UPI) —

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake Friday shook Indonesia’s eastern Papua province, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There was no immediate report of injuries or damage.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center posted no warning or watch, but said on its web site: "There is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers (62 miles) from the earthquake epicenter."

The USGS said the quake at a depth of 15.3 miles struck around 9:30 a.m. local time Friday off the south coast of Papua, 64 miles north of Dobo on the Aru Islands.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-prone zone called the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
