ECOWAS sees fair election in Ghana

ACCRA, Ghana, Dec. 10 (UPI) —

A West African political organization said its observers viewed recent parliamentary and presidential elections in Ghana as peaceful and transparent.

Incumbent President John Mahama reportedly secured another term in office with 50.7 percent of the votes cast in last week’s election, narrowly defeating challenger Nana Afuko-Addo, reports Bloomberg News.

The Economic Community of West African States said its observers viewed the election as democratic. Apart from a few logistical challenges, the bloc said, the country’s election commission "provided the necessary environment and facilities to eligible Ghanaians to exercise their franchise in a secure and transparent manner."

Voting spilled over into the weekend after biometric voter identification machines malfunctioned and because of long lines at various polling stations.

Afuko-Addo’s New Patriotic Party said it would challenge the results because of what it said were irregularities in the counting, reports Bloomberg.

ECOWAS urged "aggrieved parties" to settle their grievances using legal means.

Results from the corresponding parliamentary vote weren’t announced by Monday.
