BEIJING, April 2 (UPI) —
Two Chinese air force pilots died in the crash of their Su-27 fighter jet, the People’s Liberation Army said on its website.
The jet crashed Sunday afternoon near the city of Rong Cheng in east China’s Shandong province when the pilots were on a training mission. There was no collateral damage on the ground, the air force said.
The incident occurred on the beach 200 meters northeast of the Changhuikou Bridge near Rong Cheng City. There were no other details.
Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi on its website said the Su-27, a fourth-generation fighter, was designed in 1969 to provide effective engagement of the U.S. F-15.
China’s Global Times said China acquired a total of 40 Su-27UBKs from Russia since 1992. China began producing the Su-27 series in 1996 and has developed at least four versions fully using domestically made parts and subsystems, the newspaper said.
