60 people rappel off Florida building for cancer fundraiser

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 28 (UPI) —

Approximately 60 people rappelled down the side of a 13-story Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hotel to raise $90,000 for cancer support, organizers said.

Each participant was required to raise at least $1,000 to get the opportunity to rappel down the side of the B Ocean Fort Lauderdale hotel Saturday, getting birds-eye views of the Fort Lauderdale beach and the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, The Miami Herald reported.

The money went to Gilda’s Club South Florida, a non-profit devoted to support for cancer patients.

Michelle Dunnette, a breast cancer survivor, came down the side of the building wearing a Super Woman costume, red cape and all.

"This is not just me being Super Girl. This is for everybody with cancer," she said. "Be strong, and there’s nothing you can’t do."

Another participant, David Halpern, also wore a super hero costume: Spider-man. His grandson, David Camargo was cheering from below.

"It’s a spectacular view. Being able to see somebody, especially my grandpa dressed up like Spider-Man and being able to [rappel] in front of a whole bunch of people in the crowd, it’s amazing. It’s just truly a great experience," Camargo said.
