Sweden's spring party turns violent

UPPSALA, Sweden, May 1 (UPI) —

Walpurgis Night in Sweden led to drunkenness and violence across the country, including a rape of a minor, 98 cases of assault and nine fires, officials said.

The festival marks the coming of spring and is celebrated with bonfires, singing and heavy alcohol consumption, which often leads to a flurry of arrests, Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra reported.

In Uppsala, police arrested one man who allegedly raped a young girl. Authorities wouldn’t give details of the case.

"Apart from that it has been a regular Walpurgis Night with drunkenness, assault and vandalism," Mats Ojdahl of the Uppsala police told TT.

Another 105 people in Uppsala were arrested for drunkenness and 10 were arrested or detained for other crimes.

A fight involving 20 people broke out in Stockholm and several other cases of assault and fighting occurred in the student town of Lund.

In a northern town, Sundsvall, two people arrested after stabbing two victims with a knife, TT reported, and in central Sweden, a woman was arrested after stabbing a man in the arm.
