BAYFIELD, Wis., June 15 (UPI) —

A small plane crashed and burned on Lake Superior’s Madeline Island Saturday evening, killing two people aboard, authorities said.

The Ashland County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Office said in a release the single-engine plane crashed about 6:30 p.m. CDT while attempting to land at the island’s airport, the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune reported.

La Pointe police officers sent to the accident scene found the plane engulfed in flames in a heavily wooded area several hundred feet from the airport’s runway, the newspaper said.

The victims’ names had not been released.
