Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – The USA women finished preliminary-round play unbeaten and unchallenged with a yawner over China on Sunday to bully their way into the Olympic basketball medal phase and a seemingly inevitable sixth straight gold.

Brittney Griner and Tina Charles each had 18 points as the American team thoroughly dominated an overmatched China 105-62.

The USA women have won seven of the past eight gold medals.

They have been unstoppable in Rio — their 81-51 win over Canada two days before was the closest anyone has come to challenging them.

The USA finishes Group B at 5-0, and will face Japan in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The USA raced out to a 36-9 lead by the early second quarter and schooled the Chinese the rest of the way as Griner was all over the court.

She finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.

The USA shot 62 percent from the field while keeping the Chinese to just 34 percent.
