Venezuelan National Guard helicopter crashes 30 feet into Colombian border

CARACAS, Venezuela, Dec. 29 (UPI) — Several members of Venezuela’s National Guard were injured after a helicopter crashed, including a high-ranking general.

The helicopter crashed due to “adverse weather conditions,” Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Delcy Rodríguez wrote on Twitter. The crash occurred in the Zulia state about 30 feet inside Colombia’s side of the border.

Four people were injured in the crash. Gen. Alejandro Pérez Gámez, head of the National Guard’s Zone 11 in the state, was taken to the nearby military hospital, El Universal reported.

“National Guard helicopter with officials that were surveying border posts had an accident with no serious injuries,” Rodríguez wrote. “Adverse weather conditions led to this unfortunate accident. We thank Colombian authorities for providing support for officers.”
