Videos offer no additional leads in shooting death of Illinois officer

FOX LAKE, Ill., Sept. 8 (UPI) — Authorities have gleaned no additional clues from surveillance videos in the murder of a Chicago area police officer, who was shot to death in pursuit of three suspicious men last week.

Fox Lake, Ill., Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was found dead by backup officers just minutes after he broke radio contact while running after the suspects. Police found his body, but no clues as to who the fugitives were.

Tuesday, investigators said all known videos taken in the vicinity at or near the time of the murder have not provided any new details. Officials said Gliniewicz was not wearing a body camera and did not have a camera in his patrol vehicle, either.

The 30-year police veteran was not able to provide many details about the killers the morning of the shooting, other than to say he was chasing three men, two white and one black.

Authorities are in the process of testing DNA samples found at the crime scene in Fox Lake, which is about 60 miles north of Chicago. Investigators hope they belong to at least one of the suspects and they might already be logged into a police database.

“It was recovered from the crime scene and it is relevant,” Lake County Major Crime Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said. “Everything is put on the table, analyzed, re-analyzed.”

Security video taken at a nearby home captured three individuals who matched the suspects’ descriptions, but police said Tuesday that they had nothing to do with the crime. The FBI has been assisting in the investigation.

Police also said they are working with authorities in Wisconsin about persons of interest there.

Thousands attended Gliniewicz’s memorial service Monday, including officers from as far away as New York City and Los Angeles.
