Washington Monument closed for repairs after elevator outage

WASHINGTON, Aug. 26 (UPI) — Following an elevator malfunction Tuesday night, the Washington Monument is closed Wednesday morning for repairs.

The monument’s only elevator stopped working just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving visitors with no choice but to walk down 500 feet of stairs to exit the building. This includes two pregnant women, who had to be carried out by D.C. firefighters using special equipment.

No individuals were stuck inside the elevator, and the cause of the outage is still unknown.

The monument will announce a reopening time through social media.

The monument was also closed for a few days during the summer to solve electrical problems which included the elevator.
