NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (UPI) — New host Stephen Colbert kicked-off his debut episode of The Late Show inviting actor George Clooney to be his first guest.
However, Clooney did not have a new project or a new film to promote. “I’m just hear to see you,” Clooney said to Colbert.
To remedy this, the pair created a series of vignettes for a fake movie entitled Decision Strike, starring Clooney as a “tough, no nonsense” U.N Secretary-General. In one clip, Clooney answers a door wearing a white coat shouting, “Not now dammit, I’m diffusing a nuclear bomb.”
The conversation then turned to Clooney’s humanitarian work in Darfur and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal, who recently urged Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi to issue a presidential pardon for a trio of Al-Jazeera English journalists.
“What is it like to be the arm candy in a relationship?” asked Colbert. “She must say, like, ‘We’re going to meet extremely intelligent people tonight – these are not show folk. Just be shiny and pretty.”
Clooney nodded and said, “That’s mostly what I do.”
Other guests for Colbert’s first night included Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush with musical guest Jon Batiste and Stay Human.
“There is a non-zero chance that I would vote for you,” the comedian revealed to Bush.
Future Late Show guests for September include Amy Schumer, Stephen King, Emily Blunt, Carol Burnett, Willie Nelson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kevin Spacey and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) just to name a few.
