WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) — White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest dished out a dose of sarcasm when questioned whether GOP front-runner Donald Trump would be the healthiest person ever elected to the presidency.
In response to a report from Trump’s personal physician, Earnest said Monday the claim is a tall order.
“Is the suggestion that Mr. Trump’s doctor conducted a thorough medical examination of President Jefferson and President Adams?” Earnest said when asked Monday if Trump is healthier than President Barack Obama.
“That’s a lot of work — that’s a lot of homework to do,” he said. “Forty-four presidents to take a look at.”
Trump, who has long bragged about his health and well-being, released his medical records Monday with a letter from Dr. Harold Bornstein, who said the candidate’s “physical strength and stamina are extraordinary.”
“If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency,” Bornstein wrote.
At the daily press briefing Monday, laughing reporters questioned Earnest about the report.
“What serious health issues affecting President Obama have you kept from us?” one reporter asked.
“None that I’m aware of,” Earnest said. “You’ve gotten some regular updates about the president’s health as well, and obviously the health and medical examinations of the individual candidates is obviously a part of this process, but I don’t have a specific comment on the findings of Mr. Trump’s physician.”
He added, “I would not call into question the medical credentials of somebody who decides they were ready to conduct a medical examination of Mr. Trump. That must have been a pretty interesting appointment.”
