KENNEBUNKPORT , Maine, Aug. 12 (UPI) — A wounded veteran who lost both legs in Afghanistan in 2012 proposed to his girlfriend in front of three memorable witnesses — former Presidents George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush.
Retired Army Spc. Tyler Jeffries, who has two prosthetic legs after stepping on a IED, was helped to one knee to ask Lauren Lilly to be his wife. Without missing a beat, she said yes.
“I had been planning it for a few weeks,” Jeffries said. “I knew I wanted to do it up in Maine. I just didn’t expect to do it at the Bushes’ house.”
Jeffries was among a group of veterans who were invited to the Bush family summer home for an event to honor wounded vets. When the Bush family heard Jeffries had intended to propose, they encouraged him to do it at the Kennebunkport home.

The couple plans to invite the Bush family to their wedding.
“No one is going to be able to top this,” Jeffries said of the proposal.
