NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has held the Miami Marlins hitless through six innings but might not be allowed to throw a complete game because of a high pitch count.
The 26-year-old right-hander had allowed just two baserunners Wednesday night, walking Christian Yelich with two outs in the fourth inning and Justin Bour with one out in the fifth.
After needing 43 pitches to retire his first nine batters, Pineda threw 20 pitches in the fourth inning and 19 in the fifth, raising his count to 82. With 12 pitches in the sixth, his total rose to 94.
Pineda had struck out nine.
New York led 2-0 on RBI singles by Alex Rodriguez in the first and Carlos Beltran in the fifth. Rodriguez also singled in the fifth for his 2,997th career hit and was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Marcell Ozuna when he tried to score from second on Beltran’s hit.
