MARTHA’S VINEYARD, Mass., May 7 (UPI) — A yoga enthusiast from Massachusetts created a class that is especially targeted for men called Broga.
Instead of light music and chanting, this yoga session has The Black Keys and Led Zeppelin playing in the background.
Over 26 yoga studios and gyms around North America now offer the male-driven classes, but females are welcome to join the workout too.
Creator and co-founder Robert Sidoti told People, “It’s a really great workout where the foundation and base is yoga but then I added functional movements and high intensity interval training,”
His goal was to make the practice appealing to more men.
“I just realized that yoga helps me so much, and I wanted to be able to create something so other guys can also benefit, but I tried to do it in a different way, more of a workout approach” he said.
Classes are set up so that a yoga beginner and a professional athlete can both participate. The same core practices from traditional yoga are still used in Broga but Sidoti tried to change up common sayings he thought appealed to class full of men.
“An example is we never really use the word ‘heart.’ In most yoga classes they say something like, ‘Now open your heart.’ But to brand-new dudes, it’s like, ‘Come on!’”
There are two training courses available in Missouri and Tennessee where interested Brogis can become certified instructors.
