LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) — Zooey Deschanel revealed her baby daughter’s name during a red carpet appearance Monday.
The 35-year-old actress and husband Jacob Pechenik told People magazine they named their firstborn Elsie Otter at the New York premiere of Deschanel’s new film, Rock the Kasbah.
“It’s Elsie,” the star said. “Otter,” Pechenik chimed in. “Like the animal,” Deschanel explained before her husband added, “Sea otter!”
The couple have been together since 2014, and married prior to their daughter’s birth in late July. The actress further elaborated on the unusual name choice on Tuesday’s episode of Today.
“We just really liked the name Elsie and we both love otters,” she shared. “They’re very sweet and they’re also smart … They hold hands while they sleep, there’s so many amazing things about otters. They’re wonderful animals.”
Rock the Kasbah co-stars Bill Murray and Kate Hudson, and opens in theaters Oct. 23. Deschanel will be temporarily replaced by Megan Fox on Fox series New Girl while she takes maternity leave, and the Transformers actress was spotted arriving on set this week.
