PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., needed a big day to make it to next month's Olympic trials, and she got it against No. 2 Sherry Middaugh.

Scott defeated Middaugh, of Coldwater, Ont., 9-4 in the women's C final at the Olympic pre-trial tournament Saturday. "We were a little down, I mean those first two qualifier games were a test for us, and we didn't come out and play like we wanted to," said Scott. "We came to play today. It was a really good game."

Middaugh stumbled early, allowing Scott to steal a single in the second end and giving up another two in the fourth.

Already up 5-2, Scott added another three in the seventh. Middaugh scored a deuce in the eighth but conceded after the ninth.

"It was almost like Sherry was having that little struggle we had in those other two qualifying games," said Scott, the 2007 world champion. "Luckily, today we didn't have that. We felt very much in control of everything today."

Scott will join Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay, Ont., Calgary's Crystal Webster and Amber Holland of Kronau, Sask., at next month's trials in Edmonton. Holland was the final woman to advance, beating Marie-France Larouche of St-Romuald, Que., 7-3 in the second C final.

On the men's side, 12th seed Jason Gunnlaugson and his team from Beausejour, Man., edged Winnipeg's Mike McEwen 8-7 to advance to the trials.

Gunnlaugson led 7-6 heading into the 10th, but McEwen tied it up to force extras before losing in the 11th.

Toronto's Wayne Middaugh earned the final men's berth with a 7-4 win over Bob Ursel of Kelowna, B.C.
