An Oregon football player faked an injury during last week’s Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State so a walk-on wide receiver who had never appeared in bowl game could play.
Oregon’s Keanon Lowe faked the injury so junior walk-on wide receiver Dane Ebanez could get on the field.
On Monday, Ebanez said his teammate, Lowe, plotted to get him into the game and faked an injury “as they broke the special teams huddle, prompting assistants to wave for Ebanez, his back-up on the kickoff team, to hurry onto the field.”
Ebanez almost made a tackle on the play and was on the field for Oregon’s final offensive play, when the team was in the so-called “victory formation.”
“It was definitely my highlight,” he said.
According to the Oregonian, he has gone “$70,000 in debt with student loans trying to chase his football dream” and has won “Scout Team Player of the Year for offense, defense, and special teams.”
The Ducks have gone to four straight BCS Bowls. Oregon beat Kansas State 35-17 and led handily throughout the game, which is why Lowe’s stunt ended up working and getting his friend and teammate some playing time.
