Piers Morgan Must Stop Supporting Arsenal

CNN’s Piers Morgan takes gun control very seriously. He has hosted a series of contentious programs and interviews in which he has confronted Second Amendment advocates: “How many kids have to die before you guys say, ‘We want less guns, not more?'” Yet, somewhat surprisingly, Morgan is an avid fan of the British football club Arsenal, known affectionately as the “Gunners,” whose logo features a handsome cannon.

Morgan is not shy to criticize his team, having led a fan uprising against team manager Arsene Wenger. Surely it is time for Morgan to demand that Arsenal change its name back to the original, non-violent “Dial Square”? Surely it is time for Morgan to insist that Arsenal drop the “Gunners” nickname–just as the NBA’s Washington Bullets became the Wizards? Surely it is time for Morgan to urge Arsenal to lose the cannon from its crest?

After all, Arsenal has a global audience. It is possible–can he disprove it? I think not–that the “Gunners” and their cannon have not only inspired individual acts of gun violence, but popular enthusiasm for large-scale conflict. Yet Morgan tweets his support, regardless. How many kids must die before he will do the right thing?
