Ravens-Broncos Thriller Sets TV Ratings Records

Ravens-Broncos Thriller Sets TV Ratings Records

CBS’s broadcast of the thrilling AFC divisional playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos on Saturday, which the Ravens won in two overtimes, drew the largest audience for a Saturday AFC playoff game in 26 years.

The broadcast averaged 35.3 million viewers; the telecast peaked with an average of over 40 million viewers.

According to Nielsen, the ratings agency, and CBS, “the 35.3 million viewer average is the largest audience for a Saturday AFC Divisional Playoff game in 26 years (as far back as CBS records go, 1987-88 season).”

In essence, the ratings for the Ravens-Broncos game means one in five of all television sets in America–in addition to one in three television sets in use–was tuned in to the game.

These numbers again show the power of live sporting events in an age when fewer Americans are watching live television due to TiVos and DVRs.
