Top-ranked golfers Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods released a new Nike commercial this week that was reminiscent of the classic Larry Bird-Michael Jordan commercials in which the two superstars one-upped each other with trick shots.
Except the golfers did not shoot the commercial together. According to an ESPN source, “McIlroy’s part was filmed first, with Woods following a few days later, reacting to an actor who attempted to follow McIlroy’s script.”
The commercial has the golfers ribbing each other while successfully hitting a variety of trick shots off the tee. The commercial was filmed in October.
McIlroy signed a deal with Nike that will reportedly pay him “$200 million to $250 million” over ten years in what is the biggest deal ever in golf.
“Nike is a company and a brand that really resonates with me,” McIlroy said. “It’s young. It’s athletic. It’s innovative.”
McIlroy and Woods are the top-two ranked players in the world. McIlroy, who is using Nike equipment instead of Titlelist for the first time this week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, is paired with Woods for the first two rounds of the tournament, which started on Thursday.
