SF QB Kaepernick Only Received One College Football Scholarship Offer

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick only received one college football scholarship out of high school.

Notre Dame actually offered Kaepernick a scholarship–but it was in baseball.

The only school that pursued Kaepernick and offered him a full football scholarship was the University of Nevada. Kaepernick accepted, even though he was projected, according to reports, to be a safety.

Ultimately, Kaepernick won the quarterback job and learned the pistol formation and the read-option under Nevada head coach Chris Ault, who has been called the “godfather of the pistol” for having created and the popularized the formation Kaepernick and the 49ers have used to wreak havoc on defenses this year. Ault retired after this season.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh replaced Alex Smith with Kaepernick in the middle of the season because he felt Kaepernick gave the team the best chance of making it to the Super Bowl. Kaepernick’s tenth career start will be in the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.
