Less than a day after prohibiting reporters from live-tweeting golf events, the PGA Tour walked back its nonsensical policy on Friday by informing golf reporters on the course at Torrey Pines for this week’s Tour event they are now allowed two tweets per hole.
Officials may further clarify the policy in the days ahead.
The PGA Tour claimed the “Play-by-Play” rule was not a new regulation, but the Tour had never threatened to revoke the credentials of reporters who live-tweeted before, which PGA Tour executive Ty Votaw did in an e-mail to reporters on Thursday.
“We encourage tweeting about the @PGATOUR and generally about Tour broadcasts and competition,” the PGA Tour’s official media relations Twitter account tweeted.
Golf outlets were planning on going old-school and setting up “live blogs” this weekend to cover the Farmers Insurance Open. Reporters also were poking fun at the PGA Tour’s tweeting policy by tweeting things such as, “Tiger Woods may or may not have just eagled the 18th.”
