VA Gov. McDonnell: I'd 'Hesitate' to Get Gov't Involved in Youth, High School Football

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), who played football in high school, said he would “hesitate” before getting government involved in issues concerning football safety at the high school and youth levels.

When he appeared on MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown” on Tuesday, host Chuck Todd asked whether the state should get involved at the youth levels in matters dealing with football safety issues.

He said there would be “enough pressure” from parents and coaches for the football at the youth levels to be self-regulating.”

McDonnell said issues concerning football safety would be “worked out” by doctors and coaches.

As Breitbart Sports has written, Obama’s interview with the left-leaning New Republic, which was published this weekend, sparked debates over football safety issues at the youth level.

In the interview, Obama said: “I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football.” Obama also suggested changes would be coming to football to reduce the “violence.”
