Lindsey Vonn Airlifted to Hospital After 'Scary' Super-G Accident

American skier Lindsey Vonn, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion, was airlifted to a hospital after a severe crash during a super-G run on the opening day of the Alpine World Championships in Austria on Tuesday.

Vonn has reportedly suffered injuries to her ACL and MCL in her right knee, which would seriously jeopardize her 2014 Winter Olympics bid. Her sister told NBC Sports that Vonn will need surgery.

According to reports, “Vonn lost her balance on a tough landing, lost her ski, and slid off course into a gate before finally coming to a stop.” Vonn was examined by a doctor on the hill “for more than ten minutes” before being airlifted to a hospital.

The doctor “said he suspects she’s suffered a tibial plateau fracture – a break in the shin bone near the knee that affects stability and motion.”

A reporter covering the event tweeted that Vonn’s “Right knee/ankle bent awkwardly. Looked scary.”

The event had been “postponed for about three-and-a-half hours earlier in the day, due to fog,” and continued after a fifteen minute delay.”
