Pistorius Charged with Premeditated Murder

On Friday, prosecutors in South Africa charged Olympian Oscar Pistorius with premeditated murder and Chief Magistrate Desmond Nasir postponed his bond hearing until Tuesday. Pistorius, if convicted, faces life in prison.

Pistorius reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on Thursday, shooting her four times through the bathroom door. Steenkamp’s body was reportedly found in Pistorius’s bathroom in his home, which is in a gated community in Pretoria, South Africa.

At the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Gerrie Nel announced Pistorius has not yet been asked to plead. Police had noted there had been prior “domestic” incidents at Pistorius’s home and said they oppose granting Pistorius bail. Pistorius will remain in jail until Tuesday.

In 2012, Pistorius became the first double below-the-knee amputee to compete in the Summer Olympics. Running on carbon fiber prostheses, the man known as the “Blade Runner” made it to the 400m semifinals in London.
