Blackhawks Beat Canucks in Shootout, Tie Record with 13-0-3 Start

The Blackhaws Niklas Hjalmarsson (pictured) cut off Vancouver Canucks center Maxim Lapierre (40) to help the Chicago Blackhawks play to a tie in regulation and guarantee a point in a record 16 straight games to open the season. Chicago goalie Ray Emery caught the shootout attempt of Ryan Kesler to seal the 4-3 win and make give Chicago a 13-0-3 record to open the season.

The Canucks took a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Marian Hossa scored two goals in the second period, but then left the game after colliding with Canucks forward Jannik Hansen as the two competed for a puck in the air. His scores along with breakaway goals by Patrick Kane and Andrew Shaw helped tie 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks for the hottest start to a season, but the Canucks came storming back in the last three minutes of regulation to require overtime.

Emery is now 12-0-3 starting in Chicago, but he did have to clinge on after a late rally by the Canucks forced the overtime due to goals by Alexander Edler and Kevin Bieksa with 2:42 and 1:01 left in the game, still guaranteeing the record-tieing point for the Blackhawks, but requiring Emery’s glove save in the shootout to seal the win.
