Bubba Watson Opposes Belly Putters

Masters champion Bubba Watson went against the PGA and said he was against belly putters, opining on Twitter on Thursday that he was in favor of USGA’s proposed ban on the putter because anchoring loses the “essence of a golf swing.”

On Sunday, PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem said the PGA Tour would potentially defy the USGA and the R&A and allow players to use belly putters, which would be significant because it would mean professionals and amateurs would play by different sets of rules.

Players such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have come out against the belly putters because, like Watson, they do not feel such putts are made with a normal golf stroke. Other players have been more sympathetic to players like Tim Clark, who has a disability that forces him to use an anchored putter. Three of the last five major champions have used belly putters.

The R&A and USGA proposed banning the putter in 2016, but they may change their decision based on the PGA’s stance.

Watson, the flamboyant golfer who is never afraid to speak his mind and show his emotions, also joked that perhaps he should try anchoring because he could not putt.
