Before the Venezuelan national baseball team defeated the New York Mets in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Manager Luis Sojo, who played second base in the Major Leagues, said the team will try to win the upcoming World Baseball Classic for dictator Hugo Chavez.
Chavez died on Tuesday due to cancer.
“The country is very sad now, so we said, ‘Let’s win it for him,'” Sojo said. “He used to call me and call the players. He loved this game.”
Venezuela opens the World Baseball Classic on Thursday in Puerto Rico against the Dominican Republic.
