The Big Ten has been the top conference all year, and Minnesota’s blowout of UCLA to close out the second round Friday kept them on top. The following is the list of all 32 schools still alive by conference, and the only two conferences with more than three teams are the Big Ten (6) and the Atlantic 10 (5). In ranking the conferences by teams in the field of 32 with tournament winning percentage as the tie-breaker, the standings so far are; 1) Big Ten, 2) A10, 3) ACC, 4) Pac12, 5) Big East, 6) SEC, 7) Big 12, and 8) Mountain West.
Other Mid-Major Conferences have four teams left after going 6-5 to date, led by both Missouri Valley teams (Creighton and Wichita State) winning to advance to games this weekend. The big surprise has been the two Low-Major teams, Harvard and Florida Gulf Coast who are alive as 15- and 14-seeds, though overall the Low Majors are just 3-15 in games.
The only head-to-head between the A10 and Big Ten this weekend will pit the A10s second lowest seed Temple facing the Big Ten’s highest seed Indiana. During the season the only conference close to the Big Ten in the computer rankings was the Big East, but five of their eight teams were eliminated and Marquette barely survived against Davidson. However, Louisville and Syracuse did win lopsided games to give them three teams in the field of 32.
