Florida Gulf Coast first 15-seed to Make Sweet 16

All the questions about what went wrong with Georgetown took on a new perspective Sunday as the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles from the Atlantic Sun Conference became the first 15-seed ever to advance to the Sweet 16. The Eagles beat San Diego State by 10–their second straight double-digit win–to advance to play in-state rival Florida next weekend. The Eagles also defeated 2-seed Miami earlier in the season.

The Eagles raced out to a 7-2 lead before the Aztecs clawed back, taking a 14-10 lead with 12:36 to go in the first half. From there, it was a nip-and-tuck, back-and-forth affair throughout the first half, with the Aztecs taking a one-point lead into the half.

Then the Eagles woke up.

With the game tied at 46 at the 14:22 mark of the second half, the Eagles put on another high-flying show of athletic basketball, racing out to a 19-point lead before holding on to close out the game.

Overall, the Eagles shot at nearly 56%, led by Bernard Thompson’s 23 and Sherwood Brown’s 17.

The Aztecs shot a more pedestrian 44%, and were led by Jamaal Franklin’s 20 and Chase Tapley’s 17.
