ESPN Gets Record Ratings for USA-Mexico World Cup Qualifier

The soccer match at the Azteca between the United States and Mexico last Tuesday drew 2.39 million viewers on ESPN, which was the highest rating ever for a World Cup qualifying match on the network.

Variety noted that “this is double the 1.19 million viewers that watched the Mexico-USA match in February 2009, which had set the previous ESPN record (on ESPN2).”

According to the report, Birmingham, Alabama was the top market (2.9), followed by Austin, Texas (2.6), and Seattle-Tacoma, Washington (2.4).

The United States got their second ever point at Estadio Azteca by tying Mexico 0-0.
