Jimmie Johnson, the five-time NASCAR champion who drives the No. 48 Chevrolet car for Hendrick Motorsports, said he was praying for the family of a Hendrick Motorsports machinist who learned the MIT cop murdered on Friday by the suspected Boston Marathon terrorists was his brother. He said it is “sad” and difficult to see a teammate have to deal with these trafic circumstances.
Sean Collier, the murdered MIT policeman, was the brother of Hendrick’s Andrew Collier.
“It’s a very sad time,” Jimmie Johnson, a five-time NASCAR champion who drives the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, said on Friday. “My thoughts and prayers are with the Collier family. It’s the same for all of Hendrick Motorsports. We’re one big family. It’s sad and unfortunate to see a teammate and his family going through such a tough time.”
Johnson also learned on Tuesday that a woman who suffered a “broken leg, ankle and severed Achilles’ tendon” when the bomb exploded during the Boston Marathon “is a swim coach at the Charlotte pool where Johnson often trains.”
He added, “We absolutely will race with heavy hearts. A sporting event where most people are competing for the awareness of a charity or a cause, to have these innocent people who are there in the spirit of giving back and have this tragedy take place, it’s just ridiculous. As a society, it’s hit us deep on that.”
