Twin Brother Jarron Had 'No Idea' Jason Was Gay Until Last Year

Jarron Collins (left), who is Jason Collins’s younger twin brother by eight minutes, had absolutely no idea his twin brother was gay until last summer, which was when Jason revealed to Jarron for the first time that he was gay.

Jason came out on Monday, becoming the first active openly male gay athlete in major professional sports, and Jarron wrote that Jason called him last summer and said he had to tell him something.

According to Jarron, Jason said, “Jarron, I gotta talk to you about something serious.”

“Jarron, I’m gay,” Jason said to him in a very “simple and matter-of-fact” way.

Jarron said he responded by saying, “You’re what?”

In his piece for Sports Illustrated in which he revealed he was gay, Jason wrote that Jarron’s “reaction to my breakfast revelation was radically different from” his aunt’s, and Jarron was “downright astounded.”

“He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy,” Jason wrote. “But by dinner that night, he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives, he wanted to step in and protect me.”

Jarron and Jason Collins were nationally known basketball stars at Harvard-Westlake in high school and at Stanford in college. The twins have played in the NBA for nearly a dozen years with a variety of teams.
